"I'm from Brooklyn"

Last night, after eating cow's tongue, I somehow ended up in Mito, a city about 30 minutes from Hitachi. Fabulous times people...I attended my first hip hop party Japan-styles. Not only did I stick out in this club, but I was also quite entertained by all the Japanese "thugs"...quite an oxymoron I'd say because Japanese people are, for the most part, not thug-like at all. At first, I was slightly worried about what music they'd play, but I was pleasantly surprised! I had a great time dancing.

They also had breaks in between DJ sets where people performed on stage. Some people rapped (haha), some people danced (really well actually) and some people sang (I begged for a free CD from some chicks who were absolutely terrible...sweet). During the second round of performances, some guy comes up to me and says "Hey, how's it goin". I look at him and responded then asked him where he was from. He says "I'm from Brooklyn" with the most obviously fake accent I've ever heard. As it turns out, the guy was born in Japan and only lived in Brooklyn for 2 YEARS! hahaha what a scene. I love Japan.

Golden Week Baby!!

It's Golden Week!! Totemo tanoshimi! I am officially on a well needed vacation. In Japan, there are 3 weeks in the year that are designated as national holiday weeks. I am just starting the first which is called "Golden Week". I don't know the meaning of this holiday...perhaps something I should research. Really, the most important thing is that I have 9 days off! haha The last 6 months or so of my life have been a little challenging with extended illnesses, heartbreak, moving to a new country and starting a new job, so this vacation has come at the perfect time! The only con of having my vacation during the rest of Japan's vacation time is that travelling is brutally expensive. I would love to go to Southern Japan or to a beach somewhere but it's just not economically feasible at this time. Sooo instead, I am spending a couple of days in Hitachi to catch up on some chores and maybe to study some Japanese and then on Tuesday I will head down to Tokyo with Megumi and spend the evening at Disney Sea! The next day I'll do a bit of shopping (or window shopping in my case) and watch Megumi's boyfriend, Shogo's basketball game. This should be an exciting one because he plays Varsity ball at some University in Tokyo! On Thursday, I'll head to Tokyo Disneyland for the day and then come back to Hitachi. The weekend is reserved for a little overnight trip to Sendai (just north of Hitachi) with my student Wakana. I am not entirely sure what I will be doing there and when I ask my students what I should do there, they all say "Sendai is famous for cow's tongue". haha...yeah that is definitely the reason why I am going there.

Unfortunately, I tried cow's tongue last night at a Welcome Party for my coworker Greg's parents.

Sakura Festival In HItachi

Two weekends ago I was really sick and wasn't able to attend the famous Sakura Festival in Hitachi. Although I could hear all the commotion from my bedroom, it still wasn't the same as experiencing it first hand. So the pictures that I have added here were donated by my lovely student Wakana. These are for both you and me to live vicariously through. The festival consisted of many street vendors, a parade, different types of shows (dancers, etc.) and of course drinking your face off. This is called Hanami...it means you sit underneath the Sakura tree with family and friends and look at the tree while getting hammered. What a great country!

Mosh Pit Disney Style

This picture is proof of the great things that Japan has to offer. Mosh Pit on Disney?? Who knew Disney was so hard core? All I have to say is..."Most Pit Steamroller, You Are!!! Biiiiatch.

PS This CD is available in Tokyo if anyone wants it.

Banana Pancakes

Jack Johnson in Japan

On Saturday, April 15 I got to experience my first concert in Japan! At first, I didn't have tickets but I took a really early train to Tokyo to meet up with Megumi to ensure our chances of getting tickets. We lucked out and were able to get 2 tickets from some random guy waiting in line who just happened to have 2 extra tickets. We then went to none other than Tony Roma's! Being at a Tony Roma's with a Japanese menu and Japanese servers was definitely like walking into the Twilight Zone. Food was good though...I got Megumi to try a Margerita for the first time.

We went to wait in line for another ticket for Megumi's boyfriend, Shogo, and as we were waiting, I made friends with some high school kids who spoke perfect English. They let us join them in line once we had the extra ticket so that we wouldn't have crappy chances of being close to the stage.

To make a long story short, the concert was great. He opened with Matt Costa and ALO. I have finally decided to appreciate my tallness. There is nothing better than being able to see over everyone's heads at a concert! haha It was even easier for Megumi's boyfriend because he's about 6'2"!!!

Anyway, here he is...not really the clearest of pictures...but that is what happens when you've had a few drinks and your cell phone camera is extremely sensitive to movement.

Sakura So Sensational

Sakura in Hitachi! It's absolutely beautiful here! There is a wide street that runs through HItachi that looks like a dream with all the cherry blossoms. Driving down the street, it feels like you are driving in a white/light pink tunnel.

Pig Tongue, Love Shack, the Flu and it's been 2 months

So I don't really have anything too exciting to report. So far, the month of April doesn't seem to be all that eventful. Although, last Thursday, which was supposed to be a relatively calm evening, turned into somewhat of a this-has-got-to-be-a-weird-dream-or-maybe-movie type situation. It was my friend Pura's birthday and our friend Owada took us to this tiny little Chinese Pub in a dark alley (that just sounds creepy all on its own). We get into the pub only to find a couple of older men hammered and so delighted that some tall foreign women had stepped foot onto their territory. After a lot of cat calling and awkward looking gestures, they seemed to settle down a bit until two other drunken men come in. Amidst all the crazy things that were happening around us, we did get to sample a tasty little snack that we soon learned was pig's tongue. Some of the pieces were small and didn't look so horrifying, but a few of the pieces we could not consume were probably the full size of a pig's tongue. I just couldn't do it.....

I cannot do a good job describing the rest of the night's events but we did manage to shut them all up by singing some Karaoke songs. We strategically chose some classics that everyone most definitely loves....Kocomo, Love Shack, Like a Prayer and Bamba. They ate it up.

The following night I started coming down with what seemed like the flu. I was unfortunately confined to my bed for the majority of the weekend. It was a terrible time to get sick because I had a lot of trouble getting the day off on Saturday to cope with the illness....it even involved calling the training centre in Omiya (near Tokyo) to get them to be the middle man. After a lot of fuss though, I managed to stay in bed with my achey muscles, headache and fever. Who would want someone teaching to them in that condition anyway? I did get to experience my first hospital visit. A lot of times in Japan, people go straight to the hospital even if it's nothing too serious. Since most of the hospitals in my area were closed that day, I had to go a little further from where I live. I get to the hospital and soon learned that I was the first foreign patient they had ever had. :D "Great!" I said. But it wasn't so bad....only, the doctor didn't do much of a check up. I won't go into details, but at times like these I definitely wish I could speak the language.

This past weekend was also the Sakura festival in Hitachi (cherry blossom). I was quite upset that I missed that because I don't know if I'll have a chance to experience something like that again. Weird thing though....I could hear them setting off fireworks at 9am?!? How visually effective is that??

Hope all is well with you all at home or wherever you are. I'm definitely thinking about you! Next weekend I hope to see Jack Johnson....advance tickets are sold out but there is a chance that I can get some at the door! Cross your fingers for me!

Love,
H.

PS I've been here for two months already. Time really does fly doesn't it?
